Famously, this app isn’t keen on nudity. ⁠That said, the platform seemingly allows more nakedness from certain people than others. For instance: if you're a giant celebrity showing some skin, you're probably alright. However, there's plenty of evidence to suggest the platform disproportionately censors Black women, plus-size users, sex-positive accounts, and trans and nonbinary people.⁠ ⁠ Queer collectives Slagland and Quench are pushing back against these inconsistent censorship policies with a 2024 "not naked calendar", produced in collaboration with sex workers, pole dancers, and queer organizers. Despite all of the featured photos being relatively tame, Instagram censored each one.⁠ ⁠ The calendar comes with an open letter, which argues for more transparency from Meta, as well as “a person-centred appeals process”.
