VICEさんのインスタグラム写真 - (VICEInstagram)「Just in case you’re losing all hope, here’s some proof that a cleaner future is possible. ⁠ ⁠ As the UN warned yesterday that the planet is racing towards a catastrophic 3C temperature increase, mostly because of the burning of fossil fuels, Portugal just ran on renewable energy for a record-breaking six consecutive days. ⁠ ⁠ From the 31st of October to the 6th of November, more clean energy was produced – predominantly by wind and solar – than Portugal needed to use. The country is something of a climate trailblazer, closing the last of its coal plants two years ago, nine years ahead of its initial goal. ⁠ ⁠ Still, this kind of progress isn't out of reach for the rest of us. Researchers have found that, even in the most ambitious scenarios, we have enough material to power the entire global power grid with renewables – which, crucially, would reduce climate change, but would also be much cheaper for consumers. ⁠ ⁠ So why haven't we made the switch?
