Recently, "work discourse" has been characterised by buzzy internet trends – your "quiet quitting" or your "lazy girl jobs" – that make the whole anti-work debate all sound a little trivial. But really, we're in the midst of a massive social shift. ⁠

Between 1981 and 2022, the percentage of the British public who said it would be a good thing if less importance was placed on work rose from 26 percent to 43 percent, according to the World Values Survey. Similar studies show similar results: millennials and Zoomers are less likely than older generations to assign so much value to their careers, and would rather focus on achieving a proper work-life balance. ⁠
