Tenmoku (tianmu) bowls have been used in Japan since medieval times for zen meditation in temples and aristocratic homes. A very rare example from the Song dynasty (960-1279), this tea bowl is decorated with an exquisite dappled black glaze and striking iridescent 'oil spot' markings. Swipe through to take a closer look.
The large heirloom will be featured in the most beautiful line up of heirloom Tenmoku bowls ever to come to market. The "Karamono: Heirlooms of Chinese Art from Medieval Japan" live auction will take place at #SothebysHongKong on 9 October. Read more at the link in bio.
