“She should grow old gracefully.” How many times have you either thought that about someone or heard it said?

But when a woman does look her age or look like they have aged, they are also judged and mocked for it. ‘What happened to HER?’

We just need to look at Hollywood. How many hunks are men in their 40s, 50s, and even 60s. The silver foxes. And their costars are women in their teens or early 20s. Any older and they start playing mums. They’re not the lead. I mean, look at Mean Girls! Did you know there was only 7 years difference between Regina George (Rachel McAdams) and her mum (Amy Poehler)? Or the fact that Tom Cruise was the lead in the latest Top Gun but his female costar’s Kelly McGillis and Meg Ryan were no where to be seen.

Here is the thing:
When women look their age, or look like they have aged, they are judged and mocked for it. If they don’t look their age - usually due to some cosmetic intervention, they are also mocked for that. See Madonna.

How exactly should we age? Invisibly?

Because I’m ageing online. I’ve been on Instagram for well over 12 years. And guess what? I’m ageing. Ageing is actually really fu**king hard for women. And yet people will continue to troll and speculate and it’s all so contradictory. These comments have been thrown at me in the last couple of weeks alone. And it’s a conundrum for me too. I remind myself that growing older is a privilege denied to so many. That I get happier with age and experience. That I don’t just exist to live within the ideals of the patriarchy. But then I also want to fight ageing. If I get anything done, will I regret it? If I talk about it is that being transparent or promoting it?

Ultimately I think we shouldn’t judge each other for how we approach it. And we have to stop talking about a woman’s appearance. Especially to their face.

What are your guys thoughts, I’d love to hear?
