Freddie Mercury adored art-glass, particularly French pieces from the early 20th century. He especially loved Lalique and would spend hours in the Lalique shop in London, locked in deep discussion with the manager there.

René Lalique first made a name for himself in jewellery and started experimented with glass around 1890. He gradually developed the technique of mold-pressed glass, which he applied to a range of vases, lamps and decorative elements—all finished in a plethora of patinas and vibrant colors, as in the Lalique vases and fish ornaments appearing here in the Art Nouveau cabinet by Léon Bénouville.
