While it stands out on land, the mata mata’s shell allows this turtle to blend in perfectly at the bottom of shallow pools and streams, which is the species’ preferred habitat. It's there matamata can remain largely motionless under the surface of the water waiting to ambush potential prey, thanks to the help of their specialized snout which acts as a snorkel, allowing them to breathe without needing to swim to the surface. Due to extremely poor eyesight, the matamata must rely on other sensory aids to help them, which is where those skin flaps on the side of their head come into play. Each flap is covered with bumps and ridges that contain nerves which respond to stimuli such as vibrations caused by the movement of nearby prey. Photos taken @reptile_gardens and @zooatl.
