This timber rattlesnake hasn’t fully assumed its attack stance, but it’s safe to say this snake was not thrilled to be the subject of my camera lens. In the wild, most individuals are docile and will remain motionless, striking only as a last resort. However, males of the species do have an aggressive streak, particularly toward one another. During periods just before mating season males will engage in ritualized fighting, wrapping themselves around each other and swaying back and forth in an attempt to pin each other down.
