A species of wild cattle, the Javan banteng plays an important role in maintaining the health of the areas it inhabits. Their grazing and browsing habits help to cycle nutrients, and as a result, they influence the composition of plant communities in the ecosystem. During the dry season, they feed primarily on grass, helping to replenish vegetation in valleys. Several months later, with the arrival of the monsoon season, the bantengs will move into forest highlands where their diet will change to include herbaceous plants like bamboo.
