#tbt Napoleon (pictured) and Tau were the first two lions I started working with in 1998. The last quarter of a century working closely with lions, hyenas and leopards has been full of ups, downs, absolute joy, sheer happiness, heartache and absolute sorrow. I remember the day I met them vividly, the rest has been a blur. I’m almost 49 now and looking back, I had no idea what I was getting involved with. All I knew is that there was something about these animals that made me complete and gave me purpose. Times were different then and the conservation area has changed a lot since. Personally I find the space pretty toxic and full of judgement. I’ve seen so many people come and go, and so many conveniently suffer from amnesia and forget where they cut their teeth. There are many things I look back upon and wonder why and how, but there are also many things I look back upon and feel proud of. That’s the thing about this old life we live. No one is perfect and hopefully as we mature and grow we reflect more and more and continue to evolve into a version of ourselves that is something better than the previous one. #bebettereveryday #betterversionofme #kindredspirits #interspeciesfriendship #interspeciescommunication #truetowhoyouare
