Following leading scientist Abby Barrows across this majestic landscape it was sobering to learn that unanimously across all of our samples (glacial snow from mountain peaks, grizzly bear scat, salmon, water, and soil), there were micro plastics present in every single one of them. Additionally, as we boated through open water, our outdated satellite system had us located in the middle of a glacier… that glacier had drastically receded. As we watched the wild waves crash into the majestic blue glaciers, awed at cute sea otters and the beautiful life that exists in this region of the world, we were mind blown by its beauty. But it was gut-wrenching and all too real to see firsthand the pervasive effects that our human impact has on the environment as well as the quality of life of not just people, but also innocent species. Let’s celebrate the planet today and every day, and also let’s all try to be better at protecting her through our everyday habits and actions, and by urging corporations and our governments to take larger sustained action.
