On its way to Jupiter, the spacecraft performed several “gravity assists,” increasing its velocity by using the gravity of a larger object. In Galileo’s case, it used Venus, Earth, Earth's Moon, and two asteroids, sending it to the far reaches of the solar system, imaging and studying them along the way.⁣ ⁣ Galileo passed Earth and its Moon twice – two years apart – mapping the Moon's surface and studying and imaging its North Pole.
