Picking up the TEMPO 🏃‍♀️

On April 7 at 12:30 a.m. EDT (0430 UTC), our @NASAEarth and @スミソニアン博物館 Center for Astrophysics Tropospheric Emissions Monitoring of Pollution (TEMPO) mission launched into orbit atop a @SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket.

Only the size of a dishwasher, it’s powerful enough to observe air pollutants hour-by-hour throughout the day across North America down to a resolution of 4 square miles (10 square km) — far better than existing limits of about 100 square miles (258 square km).

It will dramatically improve the scientific data record on air pollution — including ozone, nitrogen oxide, sulfur dioxide, and formaldehyde — throughout the region. TEMPO’s data will play an important role in the scientific analysis of pollution, including studies of rush hour pollution, the potential for improved air quality alerts, the effects of lightning on ozone, the movement of pollution from forest fires and volcanoes, and even the effects of fertilizer application.

TEMPO is but one of a constellation of satellite instruments currently orbiting Earth and in development for future launches to better observe air quality around the planet.
