A new look through @NASAWebb’s Mid-Infrared Instrument reveals Cassiopeia A (Cas A) in a new light. Cas A is a massive star remnant that exploded about 340 years ago from Earth's perspective, despite being 11,000 light-years away.⁣ ⁣ Here are the spark notes (literally):⁣ Outer layers of the bubble on the top and left hold curtains of material appearing orange and red due to emission from the warm dust. This is where ejected material from the exploded star is ramming into surrounding gas and dust.⁣ ⁣ The interior of this outer shell is spotted with bright pink filaments, studded with clumps and knots. This represents material from the star itself, which is shining due to a mix of various heavy elements, such as oxygen, argon, and neon, as well as dust emission.⁣ ⁣ A loop represented in green extends across the right side of the central cavity, nicknamed “Green Monster” by researchers in honor of Fenway Park in Boston. Its shape and complexity are unexpected and challenging to understand—leaving researchers (and audiences) wanting more.⁣ ⁣ Image description: A circular-shaped nebula with a complex structure.
