It's a chaotic mess of gases, shock waves, high-energy particles and magnetic fields, mixing and matching in a bizarre environment that's not yet thoroughly understood. This image gives astronomers a look at the Crab Nebula like we've never seen it before, combining data from NASA's @chandraxray (in dark purple) with our recently-launched IXPE satellite (in magenta). IXPE is capable of studying the nebula's polarization to show us the orientation of its magnetic field—bringing us another step closer to unraveling this nebulous mystery.
