There are all these huge nightclubs on the beach, so we took a big group one night, including a model from Argentina, whose wealthy husband had hired bodyguards for her—but just her. Stella and the rest of us were on our own, I guess. It was a pretty wild scene; we had to use the women’s room for the fashion wardrobe. But Stella never complained. She would dance with someone for a while, rush to change into a new dress, and then race back to the floor and dance as if there was no tomorrow. It went on and on like this for hours. You believed her connection with each person she danced with. We walked out of the club as the sun was just coming up, and I stopped to photograph an amazing-looking woman who happened to be sitting in a convertible outside. She looked like a character out of a film noir—black hair, strong red lipstick—her eyes looked as if she’d been crying. Just as I was falling into that whole scene, Stella tapped me on the shoulder and apologized, “Bruce, I have to get back to the hotel and lay down for a couple of hours before we continue. I didn’t want to make a big fuss about it, but I’m pregnant, just so you know.” I couldn’t believe it—she had given everything that night. I felt bad but was also in awe of her energy. That’s just the kind of person Stella was—all in.
