When I was a kid growing up in Pennsylvania, my sister Barbara and I would spend hours singing along and dancing to original Broadway recordings of the shows my parents loved: “Oklahoma,” “My Fair Lady,” “Carousel”. My attachment to musical theater began there and has continued to this day. I think because of that, I’ve always felt a certain awe around people like Chita Rivera, her ability to dance and sing and act with such commitment and confidence and humanity. She’s put her imprint on decades of Broadway productions, and her name has become synonymous with many of the most iconic characters written for stage in the past 50 years. I got to know Chita personally after being introduced by my dear friend, the dancer and choreographer @richamaro, who has worked closely with her for many years. We did a big shoot together down in Miami for W Magazine in 2000 with all these Latin music legends: Alberto Menéndez, José Feliciano, Cachao, Olga Guillot, René Lavan…the list went on and on. All I can say is, everyone struggled to keep up with Chita during that shoot. Her physicality and grace put the models in their place. And this summer, we went up to spend the day with Chita (now 90!) and her daughter Lisa at their home outside of New York. “Legendary” is a word that pops to mind, but “kindness” was our big takeaway.
