@flea333 is one of those rare people I’ve encountered whose life itself is a work of art—a Rimbaud poem, a Mingus solo, a Pollock painting—driven as he is by curiosity and appetite and his unrelenting hunt of new sounds and the hidden groove. I was lucky to work with him a bunch in the late 80s and early 90s, around the time the Red Hot Chili Peppers really exploded into the mainstream. I guess Flea’s on my mind these days because it’s the 35th anniversary of “Let’s Get Lost,” and he was such a big part of that chapter of the film we shot in Santa Monica and Venice, in those easy, sun-bleached days when Chet was still with us. Chet genuinely liked Flea, which was kind of surprising, because he didn’t usually warm up to other talented and good-looking guys who played the trumpet, too. I think both of them knew a fair amount about the darker side of life from experience, which connected them as well.

I loved shooting Flea and the band—once they got going, I knew I had to be ready for whatever happened next. The Red Hot Chili Peppers’ music has always made me picture a bunch of kids putting a punk record on the stereo, destroying their room, getting caught by their mother and then putting it all back together again.

Do yourself a favor and read Flea’s book, “Acid for the Children.” If there’s anything creative you’ve been meaning to get back to—that unfinished novel, that out-of-tune guitar in the corner, that untouched sketchbook at the back of your desk—his memoir will light a fire for you. He’s got a great music podcast too.

I gathered sittings Flea and I did together for a chapter in “All-American Volume XXIII: Let’s Take and Old Fashioned Walk,” available now for purchase at Dashwood Books. Link in bio.
