@kirsten.owen reminds me of women I met while at Denison University who were studying in the art department: quite serious and beautiful and a little bit quirky. I think that misfit nature is why Kirsten and I relate to each other—we are kindred spirits that way. She and I traveled once to Mississippi together on an assignment for W Magazine. Kirsten brought along her two children. We went to a Martin Luther King Jr. celebration at the local school, and because she’s such an open and honest person, Kirsten fit right in, chatting with the students and teachers as if she lived down the street. Everyone connected with one another that day in what seemed like a very obvious way: here we all are, trying to make a go of it. The beauty of those moments had everything to do with who Kirsten is as a person.
