And then compare that to what we think if when we think of a dad - especially a "hands-on dad", as I've discussed on stories today. We praise them, coo at them, I'd even say they are considered aspirational. I bet men don't sit and say "I don't want to be like the other dads" / "I'm not like other dads" / "I don't want to do classes because I'm not one of THOSE dads". There's this thing called a 'pick me' girl. The girl who says how "she's not like the other girls", who says she doesn't really get on with girls, who is much cooler and more laid back, and who takes it as a compliment when guys tell her she's "not like the other girls" *spoiler alert: we are just like the other girls. Our subconscious hatred of what it means to be feminine, a woman, a girl in society makes us disassociate ourselves from our own to be considered cool. I had all these preconceptions about what it meant to be a mum and tried to prove I wasn't like the other ones. I see other people do it all the time too. Id say things like: "I don't like maternity clothes as I'm not frumpy and being pregnant doesn't mean I have to lose my sense of style" - as if every other mum before me who enjoyed fashion just suddenly lost that. "I don't want to do baby classes because I don't want to be one of those mums who just sits around and talks about their children" - as if every mum before me did that. My negative perceptions of what it meant to be a mum, and the notion that we have to "give up" who we are or our freedom even out me off having kids. I mean of course there'll be mums we gel with and ones we don't. Just like everything else in life. But motherhood is really what you make it, and there are some really cool mums who are just like you!✌️」4月27日 5時30分 - ashleylouisejames

Being a mum has really made me think about at my own (and society's) subconscious misogyny around motherhood.

When you think of what it is to be a mum, what do you think? What does she do? What does she look like? What does she dress like? Does she wear makeup?

And then compare that to what we think if when we think of a dad - especially a "hands-on dad", as I've discussed on stories today. We praise them, coo at them, I'd even say they are considered aspirational. I bet men don't sit and say "I don't want to be like the other dads" / "I'm not like other dads" / "I don't want to do classes because I'm not one of THOSE dads".

There's this thing called a 'pick me' girl.
