Packs of common dwarf mongooses are all about girl power. This species is matrilineal, which means the highest ranking mongoose in a pack is typically an older, dominant female. Her mate is second in command, and the two represent the only breeders in the group. Throughout the rest of the pack, no matter what age class, females are dominant over males. Only when the matriarch dies does the group split and restructure, with a new female taking the lead.
