Found in Indonesia, the Sumba hornbill plays a special role in local folklore and ceremonies. At one time these birds were collected for their meat because it was believed they held the cure for rheumatism and asthma. Long tail feathers and impressive casques were also desired by collectors, while other individuals preferred to keep the birds alive as pets. While trappers have seemingly lost interest in the collection of this species over time, a long history of such activities has left the hornbill vulnerable to extinction.
