Leading the pair is Embrace on the Beach, a large frieze full of drama and tension in the midst of a bucolic landscape. Commissioned in 1904 to decorate a nursery in the home of one of Munch’s patrons, it was deemed unsuitable for a child’s room and returned to the artist! The story did not end there, as in 1931 the work was purchased by the Nationalgalerie in Berlin but deaccessioned just six years later, when the Nazis deemed Munch among their list of ‘degenerate artists’. It then made its way back to Olso, where it was acquired by Munch’s friend and neighbour.
