Regram @alexbranczik • ‘What better painting to headline @サザビーズ cross-category London Evening Sale on March 25th than David Hockney’s monumental Tall Dutch Trees After Hobbema (Useful Knowledge) 2017.

Here we see the contemporary grand master of painting reprising a work by the Dutch Golden Age, Meindert Hobbema, which Hockney first encountered wandering through the @nationalgallery aged 18. In his eightieth year Hockney shows us he is as radical now as that precocious eighteen-year-old art student. Through his bold use of reverse perspective and the shaped canvas, Hockney puts the viewer at the centre of the panoramic composition, as if we are driving towards the horizon down the tree-lined road - as much Sunset Boulevard as it is Hobbema’s The Avenue at Middelharnis - our gaze lifted upwards to the cerulean sky by the tall verticals of the Alder trees.
