The New Year Festival (Shogatsu Omaturi) which is held annually from January 8th - 11th at Tokaebisu Shrine in Fukuoka City, is a festival where one million Hakata merchants come to worship. On January 9th, Maiko (ladies who entertains guests with dance and music) visit the shrine and pray for good luck and business prosperity for the year. During the festival period, more than 300 stalls open along the shrine approach, it’s also possible to participate in Fukubiki, where lucky charms can be won.
* In 2021, the stalls, Kachimairi (Maiko visiting the shrine), and fortune-telling have all been cancelled, and the scale of the event has been significantly reduced.
