Tamatori Festival is one of the three major festivals held in Kyushu every year on January 3rd at Hakozaki-gū Shrine in Fukuoka City. During the Shinto rituals, which are said to have started around 600 years ago, men wearing Shimekomi (a Sumo garment) are divided into teams to pray for a rich harvest and a big catch of fish, while scrambling to get a purified wooden ball. It is said that touching the ball will give you good luck, and the men struggling while being showered with purified water is quite a sight to see!
* The 2021 Tamatori Festival has been cancelled. Shinto rituals at the Tamatori Ebisu Shrine and the main shrine will still be held, but only priests and festival ministers will attend.
