As you probably remember, when Meena’s aunt (aka Vice President Elect Kamala Harris) ran for President, she was criticized for being “too ambitious.” Excuse my French but F that. My entire life, if you asked me for three words to describe myself, I would always use ambitious as one of them. I am proudly ambitious. Unapologetically ambitious. I didn’t realize this could be perceived negatively until way later in life. It actually made my dating life make sense 😂 And explained why my male boss called me a pit bull when I asked for my first raise. I got that raise though. There are very few women who succeed by accident. Even the ones who make it look effortless, I assure you, they are going after what they want in a big way and working their asses off. And obviously, women of color have an even tougher road to success, so they have to be even more persistent and assertive to get there, and deal with all the unfair criticism in return. I love that Meena Harris has written a children’s book to reclaim the word ambitious and teach young girls that having the confidence and courage to go after what you want is nothing but a POSITIVE POWERFUL thing.
