Today, in the interest of trying to find more ways to use this platform for good, I wanted to pose an idea— a group Birthday Bud gift. Let me explain for the newcomers. For the past three years, Mazzy has been paired with another 11yo girl from NYC who shares the same birthday, but her family doesn’t have the resources to buy her a big birthday present. Every December, we buy her a gift from her wish list (this year it was an Easy Bake Oven) plus a few items that she needs, like a winter coat and sneakers. Harlow has a birthday bud too. Typically, we spend about $100 on each kid and I’ve found it’s a really easy way to teach my kids about giving to those less fortunate. Two of my good friends started @birthdaybud which services families in need (mostly single moms) in both NY and South Carolina. But before you sign up, you should know that the last time I posted about them, they got inundated with so many requests, they currently have more people who want to give gifts than kids who need them. So. I have another idea for how we can help together. My friend told me that they service a few families who have larger needs than an $100 birthday gift. For instance, there is a mom who just joined for a little girl who will turn two on January 17th. They live month to month in a small apartment and are struggling. The little girl wants some Disney Princess toys and the mom needs some toddler furniture for her, like a dresser, kids table, a toddler bed and mattress. If we were to get everything on her list, it would cost $600. I would love to see if we can raise this money with small contributions of AT MOST $2 each. No more. The point is that we can all give this gift together as a community. You can venmo me at @ilana-wiles and I will update this caption as soon as we have raised the money.
