Caribou like Costello have bodies built for the cold. Everything from their thick hair to their split hooves have been designed to make living in the frigid Arctic easier - even their noses and digestive tracts. This species has the ability to smell lichen that has been buried by snow, and a special bacteria in their gut helps them to digest this food item. While lichen doesn’t have a high nutritional value, it is abundant, and the caribou’s ability to use it as a food source is key to their survival in winter when there is nothing else to eat.
