Have you ever wondered how frogs survive the winter? Some species, like the wood frog, actually freeze, turning into green ice cubes for almost seven months. Water outside of the frog’s cells freeze, leaving behind a concentrated goop, but there is never ice within the cells. Instead, the cells shrink, and what is left inside is a little bit of water bound to a massive amount of sugar. This frozen state allows the frogs to withstand temperatures as low as zero degrees Fahrenheit for months at a time. Once spring arrives, the wood frogs will use the remaining glucose in their systems to thaw out and begin the search for a mate and food.
