Commonly referred to as barking deer, southern red muntjac are known for the deep, bark-like sounds they make when on alert. A strong form of communication is of the utmost importance for a species like this one that inhabits densely-vegetated forests with low visibility. Equally important is the deer’s ability to defend itself, which is why males of this species have elongated upper canine teeth that act as tusks, capable of causing serious injury to potential attackers.
