With its flashy stripes and streaks you might expect the Montezuma quail to stand out against any backdrop, but in the mountain grasslands and oak woodlands of Mexico, this bird becomes a ghost, perfectly blending in with its surroundings. Adding to its stealthiness, this species is not one to wander far from home, often moving less than 150 feet per day. In the wild, you’ll often spot signs of these birds foraging through the pits in the soil they leave behind, long before you see the bird itself.
