While the snout of the eastern long-beaked echidna may look funny, it is perfectly designed to help the echidna consume its favorite food - earthworms! Before eating an earthworm, the echidna will position it so that it goes front first into the snout. Then, using its powerful,spiky tongue, the creature will latch onto the worm and pull it into its mouth. Now found only in New Guinea, researchers believe the species was once also prevalent in Australia and Tasmania, but the decreased presence of earthworms as the result of climate change likely led to their eventual disappearance.
