Nikolas Muray’s vibrant 1939 portrait was made during the period when Kahlo produced some of her most renowned artworks. As Kahlo’s friend and romantic partner of ten years, Muray made almost 90 known images of the artist as she explored her identity through self-portraiture and still life painting. At the same time, Muray was already in the process of revolutionizing color photography in the United States.
