“You can’t sit around and wait for somebody to tell you who you are. You need to write it and paint it and do it. That’s where the art comes .from. It’s a visual image of who you are.” — Faith Ringgold
The American artist, activist and educator is not one for sitting around. Internationally recognized for her “story quilts,” Ringgold famously reimagined the image on the syrup bottle in her earliest work, “Who’s Afraid of Aunt Jemima?,” recasting the character’s racist stereotype: “she is just fabulous in my story,” she says. In the 1960s, Ringgold pioneered the movement to have artists of color, and specifically women of color, represented in galleries, and “Mama Can Sing 3/7” (part of the “Jazz Stories” series) brings it to the forefront: uniting Ringgold’s energy and ethos all in one frame.
