Photo by @DaisyGilardini / The Great Bear Rainforest on Canada’s west coast is the home of the elusive Kermode bear (also known as the spirit bear), a subspecies of the American black bear that, due to a recessive gene, has white or cream-colored fur that makes it unique. Though it has always been illegal to hunt a Kermode bear, it is not illegal to hunt a black bear that may or may not be carrying the Kermode gene. Since 2012 Coastal First Nations have banned trophy hunting from their territory in order to promote bear-watching instead.
