I *think* this was the 2nd song I worked on (I missed out on a chance to help create “Green Eyes” so I settled for just being honored to be ask to drum on that) Erykah decided to just play the song live for us on guitar instead of a demo. i saw this as my chance to get my “Stevie” on. I was relieved Erykah was playing live with us which meant “maybe I dont have to use a click track” so that way I could speed up and slow down and play sloppy like Stevie on “Superwoman/Where Were You When I Needed You”—I mean its one thing to do the intentional Dilla sloppy “im definitely doing this on purpose” drumming, but I wanted to use this as a platform to really sound like an amateur. But in a pure way Listen to Stevie on #MusicOfMyMind the music breaths because he is the primary musician. I mighta taken it a lil too literal because I also remember doing a heavy workload that week. Whatever the case by the time we got to recording (no song was made for this album that I drummed on BEFORE midnight—so it coulda been 1-2am) at the 2:58 you hear me WAKING UP as my drumstick falls to the floor. I don’t recall how long I snoozed but I remember we did about 5 takes and my cubbyhole at Electric Lady studio A was comfy and I guess I fell asleep for a good 20 seconds toward the end of the second verse. It’s an understated performance but one of my favorite. —also mad jel I wasn’t on Orange Moon and I’m In Love With You is my fav fav Erykah song. -I never correct people when they tell me how much they love my drumming on “Time’s A Wasting” a song with the most Questlove feel w/o me being there lol Of course “Green Eyes” had me in my fomo feelings for a good six months because I had never NOT been a part of the creative process. But I couldn’t be everywhere at once. so….alas I was just happy to be invited to drum to clearly what was gonna be the emotional epicenter of this album.
