Blue-tongued skinks are the largest members of the skink family, measuring approximately 24 inches in length. When threatened, this species will puff up its body, stick out its long, blue tongue, and hiss. If this initial display is not enough to discourage a predator, the skink will flatten out its body in an attempt to look too large to attack. While their teeth are not well developed, they can deliver a powerful bite in the event that their warnings are not taken seriously.
