Photo by @francescolastrucci / The sun sets over the Thermaic Gulf of the Aegean Sea in Thessaloniki’s new seafront, filtered by the iconic “Umbrellas” sculpture. The work by Greek artist George Zongolopoulos was first introduced in 1993 at the 45th Venice Biennale and subsequently placed on the waterfront of Thessaloniki in 1997, when the city was named the European Capital of Culture. Since then its inhabitants have adopted the sculpture, which has become a landmark of the city. The sculpture appears ethereal, delicate, and ever changing according to the light that passes through it.
Vibrant Thessaloniki is the most important city in northern Greece, and it rivals Athens as a cultural center of the country. Its geographical position as a bridge to the East has been strategic since ancient times for the unfolding of its history, making it a hub of interests, trade, and cultures.
