Simply point the lens toward a bright source of light (the sun or a streetlight will do) using a wide-angle lens at a small aperture (f/18 or f/22). The number of spikes depends on the number and shape of aperture blades. Lenses with eight aperture blades will produce a star with eight spikes, while lenses with an odd number of aperture blades will double the spikes.
