It is the highest paved mountain pass in Italy and the second highest in the Alps. It links the Lombardy and South Tyrol regions during the summer season, when it’s clear from the snow. The spectacular winding road is certainly one of the most exciting in Europe. The 49-kilometer (30-mile) queen of the mountain roads was built between 1820 and 1825 and has been the scene of some legendary cycling races.
