All my neighbors were Balinese, and I loved it. In September 2004, Indonesia was holding their second presidential elections since the fall of Suharto. I was on assignment for Time magazine and thought, why to travel to Jakarta, or Denpasar, Bali's capital, and decided to go local. A one-minute walk from where I lived was the voting center for our banjar (village). On the 20th, on the second round of voting, I saw my good friend and neighbor, Made, looking all serious, sitting in a chair, keeping watch over the ballot box — Pak Made usually has the biggest smile, but on that day pretending otherwise. Maybe he just wanted to look more handsome than he already was. That morning, there was a steady flow of people voting, many I knew, many meeting for the first time. Everyone in sarongs and Balinese headdresses (I was too). Each person was proud and honored to have the freedom to vote after decades of corrupt rule by Suharto. Nearly all local Balinese living in Banjar Tandeg voted that day. This coming Tuesday, November 3, to my friends in the United States, put on your sarongs, dress, or pants, and go VOTE...you have no excuse whatsoever. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #Election2020 #ItsMyVote #vote #election #elections #politics #democracy #votingmatters #voter #fromthearchive #bali #indonesia #banjartandeg #canggu」10月31日 11時41分 - johnstanmeyer
