“Mamma. Are the sweet potatoes sad?”

“What? No, I don’t think so. Why - do you think so?”

“Yes. I think maybe they are sad because they know they are going to be eaten.

But that’s ok. I’m petting them.”

She then proceeded to pet the sweet potatoes, leaning in to whisper: “it’s ok, little sweet potato. It’s ok.”

Imagine if what we were eating wasn’t a root vegetable but a baby lamb. A little chicken. A pig. A cow. A being with a beating heart and a mother; a being that feels pain and joy and fear. A being that wants to live.
