If you want to be a more sustainable/responsible traveler, you can start by staying at places like this, the @hotelmakaaba in Bacalar! ♻️🌎💖 . This gorgeous eco boutique hotel goes above and beyond any other property I've experienced in my life, and I am completely impressed by it! . Here's some of the ways it's fully sustainable: . 1. Those chains are part of a rain water collection system on the roof! It then gets filtered and used for the shower. . 2. The waste water from the shower, sink, and toilet all get filtered multiple times, and used to water the fruit trees, and the fruits are all used at their restaurant. . 3. Food waste from the restaurant is all used in their on site composting system! The rich soil created from it then gets used in their gardens, which provide the veggies and herbs for the restaurant! . 4. The pool is natural water, which is filtered through those smaller pools you see with plants in them (and fish!). . 5. In the rooms, there is automatic lighting to help prevent excess energy being used, and the locks on the doors are keypads! They're also currently installing solar panels on the roof! . Not to mention, there are so may thoughtful cultural touches! From the three meter deep diving area of the pool made to resemble a Cenote, to the hanging wooden sun beds resembling the Mayan trading that happened in this area! Again, I was SO impressed with Makaaba! . FYI if a hotel is not "eco friendly" there's a good chance it wastes a ton of water, food, energy, and puts a lot of chemicals into the atmosphere and environment. Many hotels opt to keep running this way because it's cheaper and easier, but eco hotels are becoming more and more popular, so please be earth conscious when you book your next trip! .
