Accepted into the Académie at the age of only twenty-six, Vallyer soon became painter to Marie Antoinette in 1780, and moved into the apartments in the Louvre in 1781. Known primarily for her floral still lifes, the present painting exemplifies Vallayer at her best: the composition exhibits an elegant balance of textures, forms, and colors, with great attention to detail throughout. A book balances delicately next to the deep blue vase, the color of which radiates from the copper surface. Executed in 1775, this stunning work is one of the outstanding highlights from the collection of Ambassador and Mrs. Felix Rohatyn, to be sold in New York on 14 October.
