If you haven’t seen David Attenborough’s new film “A Life On Our Planet”, you really ought to. Along with fellows like Carl Sagan and Nikola Tesla, he’s quite easily one of my favorite prototypes of a human being; curious, genius, empathetic, elegant... In this new piece, which felt akin to Bowie’s masterpiece of a swan song “Black Star”- he warns us of the startling collapse of the ecosystem and biodiversity from a first hand account of his life since the 1940s. But unlike others he also offers solutions, such as- each couple having no more than 2 children, eating 2/3rds a plant based diet using Dutch innovated farming technology, transitioning to solar and geothermal, increasing global education and access to health care, consolidating waste in cities, forming more sustainable fishing practices, etc. He ran simulation models of what the near future would look like otherwise and trust me, you don’t want to condemn your children to that inhospitable wasteland. He aptly compared it to the ghost world of Chernobyl where human civilization was a distant memory and naught but overgrown ruins. Without sounding preachy, because oil *did* help transition the third world out of poverty, it’s important to try and move onto the next phase of cooperative evolution and tech before we enter the earth’s 6th mass extinction period. 🙏🖤
