What should a feminist photographer and art historian do when asked to comment on the work of Helmut Newton? She decides she needs to organize all her files before thinking about what such an essay entails, then she realizes that she hasn’t had a manicure or pedicure since forever and hastens to see if she can get an appointment any time soon. She consults books on fashion photography and decides where he belongs in the historic evolution of this genre among predecessors, epigones, legacies, styles, et cetera; at the end she goes immediately to Sigmund Freud’s essay on “Fetishism” (1928) to provide helpful tips to understand Newton’s phenomenal success and the (apparent) timelessness of his representations of women.
