Opinion 2 of 4. Nathalie Herschdorfer.
"By placing women’s sexuality at the heart of his images, Newton used it as an instrument of emancipation. The women he portrays have desires and claim them; their dominant attitude and provocative poses manifest in fact sensuality and independence. These erotic representations became his signature and also allowed him to migrate his photographs from the pages of Vogue to the walls of museums. At first glance, the photographer seems to have handed power over to women." writes Nathalie Herschdorfer. But "Newton’s models cannot say a word about the scenes they interpret, and his personal theatre seems, in fact, an instrument of control. Even reversing the roles, Newton does not denounce power relations. Perhaps there is even a certain enjoyment on his part in making women perform sensual scenes not scripted by them. In the light of the latest developments in feminism, one has to question the voyeuristic games and forms of domination imagined by the photographer: the woman remains locked in a single role, playing the same object of unchanging desire. Her stories are written by a man for men. We must not censor Newton, but accompany his work with a new reflection."
