“No museum in the United States exhibited Newton while he was still alive, and not even after his death in 2004. And now, under the impetus of the #MeToo movement, any museum would be very bold to take the risk of showing his work. It doesn’t matter that he was never accused of anything when he was alive. It doesn’t matter that “Every model dreamed of posing for Helmut”, as his muse Violeta Sanchez recalls. It doesn’t matter because when he was alive, it wasn’t the man who was under fire, but his work. He supposedly reduced women to mere sexual objects - the reality is far more complex but our era does not allow for nuances. Instead, in Newton's work the woman is rarely a victim: even when naked or fetishized, she is in charge. She is no longer a model but a real woman telling a story that forces men to face their own stereotypes and machismo. And for this, Newton was a revolutionary.” Read the full text by Michel Guerrin from @ルモンド in the October issue of Vogue Italia, out on October 6th and via link in bio.
