She discovered an early talent for music, and by age 11, she was touring the world to perform. After her mother and father passed away when she was in her 20s, Khulan recalls, "I was devastated and lonely. At the time, the only thing I had left was my country, so I decided to move home." She traveled to rural Mongolia, where her parents came from, and reconnected with her roots. Over six years, she was welcomed by more than 20 families who lead nomadic lives. “I assumed that Mongolian nomads were hospitable out of kindness like anybody else," she says. "But then I realized it was more than that; it was about surviving as a community ... Today, it's a stranger who needs help, but tomorrow, it could be you." These families move their households — goats and cows included! — roughly 4 times a year, picking up and setting up their tent-like yurts wherever they decide to go.
